PORTLAND, Oregon - The Oregon Chapter of the PNW PGA hosted the best PGA professionals from around the state at Riverside Golf & Country Club on Tuesday and Wednesday for OPGA Regional Cup.
Four regions are represented in the OPGA Regional Cup- Portland (Longview to Wilsonville), Willamette Valley (Woodburn to Creswell), Central Oregon, and Southern Oregon (Cottage Grove to Ashland).
The Portland region won with a team total of 16 points which was accrued over two 18-hole matches in which the teams played a variety of fourball, foursomes, and head-to-head match play.
The Portland region was represented by Jared Lambert (Astoria Golf & Country Club), Zach Emery (Waverley Country Club), Andrew Edmunds (Willamette Valley Country Club), Aaron Benedetti (Pacific University of Oregon), Nicholas Huff (Riverside Golf & Country Club), and Hunter Wescott (NW Golf Guys).
“24 of us get to come here, you're getting a real wide spread of all of our regions in Oregon. For all of us to meet up in one place, a lot of us work long hours during the days and driving long hours to get to tournaments.” Hunter Wescott, Portland Region Captain from NW Golf Guys said. “For us to meet up see each other, actually play together, bounce off ideas, work ideas, have a good time, and have fun.
“That's what this event does for all of us as pros, to get together, have fun, and have a little bit of competitiveness to it too. The greens were perfect, the greens were in fantastic shape.”
The Regional Cup is a season-long competition that is comprised of 16 qualifying pro-am events. Each region has four events that are designated as qualifiers.
Professionals from each region that participate in the selected qualifying pro-ams earn points based on how they placed in those events. Professionals may go outside of their region to play, and the points earned will go toward the region in which they are employed.
At the end of 16 qualifying events, the top six players in each region were awarded a spot on their Regional Cup team.
