Eden, Utah - The Portland State Viking’s women’s golf team started their Fall season on Monday, September 16 with 36 holes and would end with those results as the final round was rained out Tuesday.
The Vikings played in the Kelsey Chugg Invitational hosted by Weber State at Wolf Creek Golf Club in Eden, Utah.
Thunderstorms and heavy overnight rains washed out the final round of the tournament. Standing water on the Wolf Creek Golf Club Course made it unplayable. As a result, California Baptist was declared the winner with the lead after 36 holes. Portland State tied for ninth place.
Cynthia Valerie Ong was the top Viking, tying for 17th place. Ong, a sophomore, shot rounds of 77-77=154.
Samantha Dizon of California Baptist took the individual title. Dizon was the only player to shoot par with rounds of 74-70-144.
Host Weber State placed second in the tournament after posting 308-290=598. The Vikings shot 312-318=630 through two rounds.
Junior Payten Shimizu tied for 22nd among 70 golfers competing in the tournament. Shimizu carded 78-78=156.
Tied for 39th were senior Tannica Porter and junior Bayler Brundage at 160. Sophomore Momo Udom was in 63rd at 171.
Ong had five birdies in the competition's 36 holes, Brundage had three, Shimizu and Porter had two, and Udom had one.
It was the first of four fall tournaments for the Vikings. PSU returns to play on Sunday, September 22, and Monday at the Eagle Invitational at Circling Raven Golf Course in Worley, ID.
PSU will host the Portland State Invitational on October 15 and 16 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club.
Portland State placed eighth at the 2024 Big Sky Championship last April.
