PSU Vikings Women's Golf to Host Portland State Invitational

First Home Tournament in 5 years for the Vikings Program

PORTLAND - For the first time in five years, the Portland State women’s golf team will host a tournament at Columbia Edgewater Country Club on Monday, October 14-15.

The finale of the fall golf season could not be bigger for the Portland State Vikings as they host their first tournament in five years.

The event will be at the same place the Vikings practice, along with the home of the Portland Classic.

The Vikings will host the 54-hole event with 10 teams competing over two days with 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

The teams playing in the event include a northwest flavor: Eastern Washington, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Weber State, Seattle, Utah Valley, and Southern Utah.

PSU previously had a tournament from 2010-19 at Langdon Farms Golf Club - the Rose City Collegiate - but when the 2020 fall season was canceled due to COVID, the event didn’t return.

The Viking team comes off a final-round 298 score in its most recent event on Oct. 1 at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational in Tacoma. That score is the best of the fall so far and continued a trend of improved scoring through three events - from 315.0 to 310.0 to 305.3.

Being able to play on their home course at Columbia Edgewater will be a boost that none of the current Vikings have had in their careers.

Senior Tannica Porter is setting a nice pace as the leading scorer so far. In her last five rounds, she has shot 74-74-74-74-75 and has a team-best scoring average of 75.85 this season.

Juniors Payten Shimizu and Bayler Brundage come off rounds of 73 and 74, respectively, in the final round of the Harbottle. Sophomore Momo Udom posted a 78, which was her best score of the fall as well. With newcomer Avery Kageyama, a senior, carding 76 in that round and sophomore Cynthia Valerie Ong (77.00) returning after missing time with injury, the Vikings are at full strength.

The Portland State Invitational should also serve as a mini-Big Sky Conference primer with seven of the 10 league teams participating in the tournament.

Spectators are welcome to attend the event. Enter Columbia Edgewater Country Club on Marine Drive. Spectators can buzz in at the front gate to gain entrance.

Play begins both days at 8:30 a.m.
